Timeline

2017

Kylie Aoibheann McDonnell is an asexual and transfeminine filmmaker whose intimate, uncompromising and idiosyncratic style of storytelling, deals with the experiences of Australians rarely seen onscreen. During their three years studying at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), they refined their craft as a director, writer and editor across many celebrated projects - pairing their gritty and immersive, yet highly-personal style of filmmaking, with a passion for collaborating with diverse individuals and communities. In 2017, they collaborated with the award-winning author Fiona Wright to write, direct and co-edit Farewell Happy Fields: a reflexive documentary about anorexia and depression. The film has since screened across numerous international festivals such as Short Film Breaks and Sydney World Film Festival. Over two years, they collaborated with the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing community to write, direct and co-edit See for Yourself: a psychological thriller told in English and Auslan (Australian Sign Language), and felt through the eyes and ears of a profoundly Deaf teenager.
