L. S. Kollmorgen was an American engineer and inventor who was best known for his work in the field of servo motors and motion control systems. He was born in Los Angeles, California, and attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. Kollmorgen began his career in the 1950s, working for the U.S. Navy as an engineer. He then went on to work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In the 1960s, he founded Kollmorgen Corporation, which specialized in the development of servo motors and motion control systems. Kollmorgen was awarded numerous patents for his inventions, including the first servo motor with a built-in amplifier. He was also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Kollmorgen passed away in 2020 at the age of 96. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and four grandchildren.
