Lamberto V. Avellana was a Filipino film director, writer, and producer. He was born in Bontoc, Mountain Province, Philippines on February 12, 1915. He was the son of a schoolteacher and a farmer. He studied at the University of the Philippines and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. Avellana was a pioneer of Philippine cinema, and is best known for his films Anak Dalita (1956) and Badjao (1957). He was also the first Filipino director to win an international award, for his film Anak Dalita, which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1956. Avellana was also a prolific writer, having written several books, including the novel The Lost Command (1962). He was also a founding member of the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines, and was a professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. Avellana died on August 8, 1991 in Quezon City, Philippines. He was 76 years old.
