Lamine Diakhate was a Senegalese politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of Senegal from 1981 to 1983. He was born in the village of Ndioum, Senegal, on 16 September 1928. Diakhate was educated at the Ecole Normale William Ponty in Dakar, and then at the University of Paris, where he earned a degree in law. He then returned to Senegal and worked as a lawyer and a professor of law at the University of Dakar. In 1961, Diakhate was appointed as the Minister of Justice in the government of President Léopold Sédar Senghor. He served in this position until 1968, when he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this position until 1981, when he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Senegal. Diakhate served as Prime Minister until 1983, when he was replaced by Mamadou Dia. He then returned to his position as Minister of Foreign Affairs, a post he held until 1988. Diakhate was a member of the Socialist Party of Senegal, and was a close ally of President Senghor. He was also a member of the African Union, and served as the President of the Organization of African Unity from 1983 to 1984. Diakhate died on 15 April, 2020, at the age of 91.
