Lammar Wright Jr. was born in Kansas on September 26, 1924. He was a jazz musician and composer who was known for his work with the Count Basie Orchestra. He was also a member of the Kansas City Six, a group of jazz musicians who were influential in the development of the Kansas City jazz sound. Wright began playing the trumpet at the age of nine and was soon performing with local bands. He attended the University of Kansas and studied music theory and composition. After graduating, he joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1945 and toured with them for the next two years. In 1947, Wright left the Basie Orchestra and joined the Kansas City Six. The group was influential in the development of the Kansas City jazz sound, which was characterized by a hard-driving, blues-based style. Wright was a featured soloist on many of the group's recordings. In the 1950s, Wright moved to Los Angeles and worked as a session musician. He also wrote and arranged music for television and film. He continued to perform and record until his death in 1983. Throughout his career, Wright was known for his lyrical, melodic playing and his ability to improvise. He was also known for his skill as an arranger and composer. He was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
