Larry Adler was an American harmonica virtuoso, composer, and actor. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 10, 1914. He began playing the harmonica at the age of 10 and soon became a child prodigy. He was the first person to make the harmonica a respected instrument in the world of classical music. Adler's career spanned over seven decades, and he performed with some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, including George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, and Sting. He also composed music for films, including the score for the 1948 film The Red Shoes. Adler was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film Genevieve in 1954. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Performance for his album The Glory of Gershwin in 1997. Adler died on August 6, 2001, at the age of 87. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
