Laurie Levenson is an American professor of law and former federal prosecutor. She is a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California, where she teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, and white-collar crime. She is a nationally recognized expert in criminal law and procedure, and has appeared on numerous television and radio programs. Levenson graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1981. Levenson began her legal career as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney's Office in Los Angeles. She served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1981 to 1986, and as a Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division from 1986 to 1989. Levenson joined the faculty of Loyola Law School in 1989, where she has been a professor of law since then. She has also served as the Director of the Loyola Center for Ethical Advocacy since 2000. Levenson has written extensively on criminal law and procedure, and has authored or co-authored several books, including "Criminal Procedure: From First Contact to Appeal" (with Robert P. Mosteller and John L. Worrall, 4th ed. 2016), "White Collar Crime: Law and Practice" (with Ellen S. Podgor and Peter J. Henning, 4th ed. 2016), and "Criminal Law: Cases and Materials" (with Robert P. Mosteller and John L. Worrall, 5th ed. 2017). Levenson has received numerous awards and honors, including the American Bar Association's Outstanding Professor Award in 2006, the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Outstanding Professor Award in 2007, and the American College of Trial Lawyers' Outstanding Professor Award in 2008. While a federal prosecutor, she tried a wide variety of federal criminal cases, including violent crimes, narcotics offenses, white collar crimes, and immigration and public corruption cases. She served as Chief of the Training Section and Chief of the Criminal Appellate Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In 1988, she received the Attorney General’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance. Additionally, she received commendations from the FBI, IRS, U.S. Postal Service, and DEA.

She has been a legal commentator for CBS, CNN, ABC, NBC and NPR. She has commented on a wide range of high-publicity cases, including the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the Rodney King beating trial, the Menendez murder trials, the Michael Jackson molestation case, the Scott Peterson murder trial, the Bernard Madoff investigation, the Clinton impeachment, the Robert Blake murder trial, the trial of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, the prosecution of Anna Nicole Smith’s physicians, UCI Medical Scandal, the Death of Conrad Roy as a result of digital suggestion from Michelle Carter, and the prosecution of Dr. Conrad Murray.

Levenson joined the Loyola Law School faculty in 1989. Levenson lectures regularly throughout the country and internationally for the Federal Judicial Center, National Judicial College, international bar associations, bar review courses, community groups and legal societies. She also testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee and the California Legislature regarding SB 490 (Death Penalty).

She teaches evidence, criminal law, criminal procedure, ethics, anti-terrorism, and white collar crime. She served as Loyola’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1996-1999. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Levenson is also the Director of the Loyola Center for Ethical Advocacy. She was the 2003 recipient of Professor of the Year from both Loyola Law School and the Federal Judicial Center.
