Lauro Cavazos is an American educator and former United States Secretary of Education. He was born on January 4, 1927 in Kingsville, Texas. He attended Texas A&M University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1949 and a master's degree in 1950. He then earned a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1956. Cavazos began his career as a teacher and coach in the public schools of Kingsville, Texas. He then served as a professor and administrator at Texas A&M University from 1956 to 1972. In 1972, he was appointed president of Texas Tech University, where he served until 1980. In 1988, Cavazos was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve as the United States Secretary of Education. He served in this position until 1990. After leaving the Department of Education, Cavazos served as president of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1990 to 1993. Cavazos has received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and the Texas Institute of Letters. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. As of 2021, Lauro Cavazos is 95 years old and has a net worth of $1 million.
