Lazar Matveev is a former Soviet military officer and politician who served as the Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union from 1984 to 1988. He was born in Krasnoyarsk Krai, RSFSR, Soviet Union (now Russia) on 17 April 1927. Matveev joined the Soviet Army in 1945 and served in the Far East Military District. He graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1954 and the General Staff Academy in 1965. He was promoted to the rank of General of the Army in 1984. Matveev served as the Minister of Defense of the Soviet Union from 1984 to 1988. During his tenure, he oversaw the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan and the reduction of the Soviet military. He also oversaw the modernization of the Soviet military and the development of new weapons systems. Matveev retired from the military in 1988 and was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner. He died on 28 April 2021 at the age of 94.
