Lefty O'Doul was a professional baseball player and manager who played in the Major Leagues from 1919 to 1934. He was a two-time All-Star and a two-time National League batting champion. He was also a successful manager, leading the San Francisco Seals to three Pacific Coast League championships. O'Doul was born in San Francisco, California, on March 4, 1897. He began his professional baseball career in 1915 with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. He was a successful hitter, batting .319 in his first season and .341 in his second. He was signed by the New York Yankees in 1919 and made his major league debut on April 15. O'Doul was a two-time All-Star and a two-time National League batting champion. He led the league in batting average in 1929 with a .398 average and in 1932 with a .368 average. He also led the league in hits in 1929 with 254 and in 1932 with 230. He was also a successful manager, leading the San Francisco Seals to three Pacific Coast League championships. O'Doul retired from baseball in 1934 and returned to San Francisco. He opened a bar and restaurant called Lefty O'Doul's, which became a popular spot for baseball fans. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Lefty O'Doul died on December 7, 1969, at the age of 72. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. He was posthumously inducted into the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.
