Leo Brouwer is a Cuban composer, conductor, and guitarist. He is one of the most influential and widely performed contemporary composers of classical music in the world. He has composed over one hundred works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and solo works for guitar. He has also written extensively for film and television. Brouwer was born in Havana, Cuba, and began studying music at the age of eight. He studied composition with his father, Juan Brouwer, and later with composer and conductor Leo Brouwer. He also studied guitar with his uncle, the renowned guitarist and composer, Isaac Nicola. Brouwer has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Music Prize of Cuba, the National Music Prize of Spain, and the National Music Prize of Mexico. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Havana, the University of Miami, and the University of Puerto Rico. Brouwer's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also conducted performances of his own works with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Brouwer is currently the director of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra and the Cuban National Choir. He is also a professor at the National School of Music in Havana.
