Daniel was born on 17 February 1927 in Ruse, Bulgaria. He studied at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, and graduated in 1952. He began his career as a director in the 1950s, directing several short films and documentaries.
In 1969, Daniel directed the epic war film The Red Tent, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The following year, he directed The Battle of Neretva, which was also nominated for an Academy Award.
In 1971, Daniel directed the Italian-language thriller The Cat o' Nine Tails, which was a box office success. He also directed the 1975 film The Cassandra Crossing, which starred Sophia Loren and Richard Harris.
Daniel has also written several screenplays, including the screenplay for The Red Tent.
