Lewis Arthur Tambs was a United States diplomat and ambassador. He was born in San Diego, California, on July 7, 1927. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with a degree in political science in 1949. He then attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he earned a master's degree in international relations in 1951. Tambs served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1953, and then joined the United States Foreign Service in 1954. He served in various diplomatic posts in Latin America, including as ambassador to Costa Rica from 1981 to 1983 and ambassador to Colombia from 1983 to 1986. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs from 1986 to 1989. Tambs was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Diplomacy. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989. He died on April 15, 2018, at the age of 90.
