Lindsay Anderson was born in Bengaluru, India, on 17 April 1923. He was the son of a British army officer and a Scottish mother. He attended Cheltenham College and later studied at Oxford University, where he became involved in the theatre. After graduating, he worked as a film critic for the magazine Sequence and then as a director for the BBC. Anderson's first feature film, This Sporting Life (1963), was a critical success and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. He went on to direct several other films, including If.... (1968), O Lucky Man! (1973), and Britannia Hospital (1982). He also wrote and directed several documentaries, including We Are the Lambeth Boys (1959) and Is That All There Is? (1969). Anderson was a passionate advocate for social change and was a vocal critic of the British government. He was a member of the Free Cinema movement, which sought to bring social realism to British cinema. He was also a founding member of the British Film Institute. Lindsay Anderson died on 30 August 1994 at the age of 71. His net worth at the time of his death is unknown.
