Lionel Monckton was an English composer, conductor, and musical director. He was born in London, England, and began his career as a pianist and organist. He was a prolific composer of musical theatre, writing over 200 musicals and revues. He was also a successful conductor and musical director, working on some of the most popular musicals of the early 20th century. Monckton was a major contributor to the development of the British musical theatre, and his works were performed in the West End and on Broadway. He wrote the music for the hit musicals The Arcadians (1909) and The Quaker Girl (1910). He also wrote the music for the popular revue A to Z (1912). Monckton was a popular figure in the London music scene, and was a member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. He was knighted in 1921 for his services to music. He died in London in 1924.
