Lois Michele Young is a Belizean diplomat and politician who has served as the Ambassador of Belize to the United Nations since 2008. She is the first woman to serve in this position. Young was born in Belize City, Belize, on 19 January 1951. She attended St. Catherine's Academy in Belize City and then went on to study at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History. She then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in International Relations at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Young began her career in the public service in Belize in 1975, when she was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Belize. She then went on to serve as the Director of the Department of Women's Affairs in Belize from 1979 to 1984. In 1984, she was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Belize to the United Nations, a position she held until 2008. In 2008, Young was appointed as the Ambassador of Belize to the United Nations, a position she still holds today. She has also served as the Chair of the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations from 2009 to 2010. Young is married to Dr. David Young and has two children.
