Louie Bellson was an American jazz drummer and composer. He was a prolific composer, recording artist, and educator, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential drummers of all time. He was a pioneer in the use of two bass drums, and was one of the first major jazz artists to take up the instrument. Bellson began playing drums at the age of three, and by the age of seven he was performing professionally. He studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School of Music, and was a member of the Benny Goodman Orchestra from 1942 to 1945. He went on to perform with a variety of jazz greats, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald. Bellson was also a prolific composer, writing over 200 compositions, including the jazz standard "Skin Deep". He also wrote the theme song for the television show The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Bellson was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement in 1974, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2005. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1985, and the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2006. Bellson died on February 14, 2009, at the age of 84.

He toured with Jazz At the Philharmonic, and later organized his own band and did a concert tour with his wife Pearl Bailey. In 1965 he rejoined the Ellington orchestra. He has made many records.
