Louis L. Stanton was a prominent American lawyer and judge who served as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1966 to 1994. He was born in New York City, New York, on October 1, 1927. He attended the City College of New York and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. He then attended Columbia Law School, where he received his LL.B. in 1951. Stanton began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Irving R. Kaufman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1951 to 1952. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1952 to 1956. He then entered private practice in New York City from 1956 to 1966. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Stanton to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Judge Irving Ben Cooper. Stanton was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 11, 1966, and received his commission on August 12, 1966. He served as Chief Judge from 1979 to 1986, and assumed senior status on October 1, 1994. He served in that capacity until his death on April 28, 2021. At the time of his death, Stanton was the oldest active federal judge in the United States. He was 96 years old.
