Louis Leakey was a Kenyan paleoanthropologist and archaeologist who made significant contributions to the study of human evolution. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya, on August 7, 1903, to missionary parents. He was educated in England and returned to Kenya in 1924. Leakey was a pioneer in the field of paleoanthropology, and his discoveries of early hominid fossils in East Africa helped to establish the theory of human evolution. He was also a major proponent of the idea that Africa was the cradle of human evolution. Leakey's most famous discoveries include the fossilized remains of Homo habilis, which he found in Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania in 1959, and the fossilized remains of Homo erectus, which he found in Kenya in 1972. He also discovered the first fossilized remains of Homo sapiens in East Africa in 1984. Leakey was also a major proponent of the idea that Africa was the cradle of human evolution. He was a strong advocate for the conservation of African wildlife and was instrumental in the establishment of the Kenya Wildlife Service. Leakey died in Nairobi on October 1, 1972. He was 69 years old.
