Ludwig Berger was a German film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. He is best known for directing the classic silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). He also directed the first German sound film, The Blue Light (1932). Berger was born in Mainz, Hesse, Germany, on 6 January 1892. He began his career as a stage actor in 1912, and soon after began working in the film industry. He worked as a cinematographer on several films before making his directorial debut in 1919 with the silent film The White Hell of Pitz Palu. Berger's most famous film is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), which he co-directed with Robert Wiene. The film is considered a classic of German Expressionist cinema and is often cited as one of the greatest films of all time. Berger also directed the first German sound film, The Blue Light (1932). He continued to direct films until his retirement in the 1950s. Berger died in Munich, Germany, on 28 April 1975.
