Luis Rainer was an Austrian-American actor who was born on August 2, 1885 in Brixen, Tyrol, Austria-Hungary. He was best known for his Academy Award-winning performance in the 1936 film The Great Ziegfeld. Rainer began his career in the theater, performing in Vienna and Berlin before moving to the United States in 1929. He made his American film debut in the 1931 film The Man Who Played God. He went on to appear in a number of films, including The Emperor Waltz (1948), An American in Paris (1951), and The Story of Three Loves (1953). Rainer won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Great Ziegfeld. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Good Earth (1937). Rainer died on December 30, 1986 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 101. He was survived by his wife, the former Francesca Braggiotti, whom he married in 1933.
