Madhukar Krishna Naik was an Indian freedom fighter and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Goa from 1980 to 1989. He was born in a small village in Goa, India, on 7 January 1926. He was educated at the University of Bombay and the University of Goa. Naik was a member of the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly in 1967. He served as the Minister of Education and Social Welfare in the Government of Goa from 1972 to 1980. In 1980, he was elected as the Chief Minister of Goa and served in that position until 1989. Naik was a strong advocate of the Konkani language and was instrumental in the formation of the Konkani Language Academy in Goa. He was also a strong advocate of the rights of the people of Goa and was instrumental in the formation of the Goa State Human Rights Commission. Naik passed away on 28 April 2021 at the age of 97. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
