Maeve Binchy was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, columnist, and speaker best known for her sympathetic and often humorous portrayal of small-town life in Ireland. She was born on 28 May 1940 in Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland. She was the eldest of four children born to William Binchy, a barrister, and Maureen Binchy. Maeve attended the Holy Child convent in Killiney and then University College Dublin, where she studied English and history. After graduating, she worked as a teacher in various schools in Dublin. Maeve began writing in the 1970s, and her first novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in 1982. She went on to write a number of best-selling novels, including Circle of Friends (1990), Tara Road (1998), and Whitethorn Woods (2006). She also wrote several collections of short stories, including The Lilac Bus (1984) and This Year It Will Be Different (1995). Maeve was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin in 1999, and was made a member of the Irish Academy of Letters in 2000. She was also awarded the Irish PEN/A.T. Cross Award in 2002. Maeve Binchy died on 30 July 2012, aged 72, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Snell, whom she married in 1977.
