Mahmoud Darwish was a Palestinian poet and author who wrote more than 30 books of poetry and eight books of prose. He was considered the Palestinian national poet and was one of the most celebrated poets in the Arab world. He was born in the village of al-Birwa in the Galilee region of Palestine. He was forced to flee his home during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and lived in exile for much of his life. Darwish's poetry was highly influential in the Arab world and was widely translated into other languages. He was awarded numerous prizes, including the Lenin Peace Prize, the Lannan Foundation Prize for Cultural Freedom, and the Prince Claus Award. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996. Darwish died in 2008 at the age of 67. He was buried in Ramallah, Palestine, and his funeral was attended by thousands of mourners. He is remembered as a symbol of Palestinian resistance and a champion of freedom and justice.
