Mamata Shankar is an Indian dancer, choreographer, and actor. She is the daughter of legendary dancer Uday Shankar and the sister of Ananda Shankar, a renowned musician. She is best known for her roles in films such as Satyajit Ray's Ghare Baire and Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane. Mamata Shankar was born on 7 January 1955 in Kolkata, India. She studied at the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre in Kolkata and later trained in Kathak and Manipuri dance forms. She has also trained in modern dance forms such as jazz and contemporary. Mamata Shankar has acted in several films, including Satyajit Ray's Ghare Baire, Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane, and Goutam Ghose's Paar. She has also acted in television serials such as Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. Mamata Shankar has also choreographed several dance performances, including the opening ceremony of the National Games in Kolkata in 1995. She has also choreographed for films such as Aparna Sen's Paromitar Ek Din and Goutam Ghose's Paar. Mamata Shankar has been awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2010.
