He began his career in the music industry as a session musician, playing drums and guitar. He then moved into production, working with The Guess Who on their first album, Shakin' All Over, in 1965. He went on to produce all of their albums until 1975, when he left the band. Pittson has also produced albums for other Canadian artists, including Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, and Bruce Cockburn.
