Manuel Ayau was a Guatemalan economist, lawyer, and professor who founded the Universidad Francisco Marroquín (UFM) in 1971. He was born in Guatemala City on December 27, 1925. He studied economics at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala and received his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 1954. Ayau was a professor of economics at the University of San Carlos and the University of Costa Rica. He was also a professor of law at the University of San Carlos and the Universidad Rafael Landívar. He was a member of the Guatemalan Academy of Sciences and the Guatemalan Academy of History. Ayau was a strong advocate of free-market economics and a critic of government intervention in the economy. He was a proponent of private property rights and a critic of government corruption. He was also a strong advocate of individual liberty and freedom of speech. Ayau was a prolific writer and published numerous books and articles on economics, law, and philosophy. He was also a frequent lecturer and public speaker. He was awarded the Order of the Quetzal, the highest honor in Guatemala, in 2004. Ayau died on April 28, 2011, at the age of 85. He was survived by his wife, four children, and seven grandchildren.
