Marcel Aymé was a French novelist, playwright, and short story writer. He was born on 29 March 1902 in Joigny, Yonne, France. He was the son of a lawyer and a schoolteacher. He studied at the Lycée Janson de Sailly in Paris and then at the École Normale Supérieure. Aymé began writing in the 1920s, and his first novel, Le Passe-Muraille, was published in 1931. He wrote several novels, plays, and short stories, and his works were translated into many languages. He was awarded the Grand Prix du Roman de l'Académie Française in 1945 for his novel Le Diable et le Bon Dieu. Aymé was a member of the Académie Goncourt and the Académie Française.
