Marcel Vandewattyne is a Belgian long-distance runner who was born on 7 July 1924. He is best known for his success in the marathon, having won the gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He also won the silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Vandewattyne began his running career in the 1940s, competing in local races in Belgium. He quickly rose to prominence, winning the Belgian national marathon championship in 1950. He went on to compete in the 1952 Summer Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the marathon. Vandewattyne continued to compete in marathons throughout the 1950s and 1960s, winning several more national championships. He also competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics, where he won the silver medal in the marathon. Vandewattyne retired from competitive running in the late 1960s. He is now 85 years old and lives in Belgium. He is still active in the running community, attending races and giving advice to younger runners.
