Banks attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he played college basketball for the Runnin' Rebels. He was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2003. Banks was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2003 NBA draft with the 13th overall pick. He played for the Celtics for two seasons before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in 2005. He played for the Suns for two seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2007. He played for the Raptors for two seasons before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009.
