He was a member of the first Austrian expedition to the Himalayas in 1950, and in 1953 he became the first person to summit Nanga Parbat. He also made the first ascent of the 8,000-meter peak of Gasherbrum I in 1958. Schmuck has also made numerous first ascents in the Alps, including the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1962. He has also written several books about his mountaineering experiences.
