Maria Ley Piscator was an Austrian-born actress and theatre director. She was born on August 1, 1899 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. She was the daughter of the famous theatre director Erwin Piscator and his wife Maria Ley. Piscator began her career as an actress in the 1920s, appearing in a number of plays and films. She was a member of the famous Piscator-Ley theatre company, which was founded by her father and mother. She also worked as a director, staging plays in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In the 1930s, Piscator moved to the United States, where she continued to act and direct. She was a member of the Group Theatre in New York City, and she directed a number of plays for the company. She also directed plays for the Federal Theatre Project, a government-funded program that provided employment for actors and directors during the Great Depression. Piscator returned to Europe in the 1940s, and she continued to direct plays in Germany and Austria. She also wrote several books about her father's life and work. Piscator died in Vienna on April 15, 1981. She was 81 years old.
