Mariano Azaña was a Spanish politician who served as the second and last President of the Second Spanish Republic from 1936 to 1939. He was born on 10th October 1896 in Madrid, Spain. He was the son of a lawyer and a teacher. Azaña studied law at the University of Madrid and became a professor of law at the University of Valencia. He was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and was elected to the Spanish Parliament in 1931. He was appointed Minister of War in the government of Manuel Azaña in 1933. In 1936, Azaña was elected President of the Second Spanish Republic. He was a strong advocate of democracy and social reform. He was also a strong opponent of fascism and the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco. During his presidency, Azaña implemented a number of reforms, including the introduction of universal suffrage, the separation of church and state, and the nationalization of the banking system. He also attempted to introduce a new constitution, but this was blocked by the military. In 1939, Azaña was forced to flee Spain after the military coup of General Francisco Franco. He died in exile in France in 1940. Mariano Azaña was a highly influential figure in Spanish politics and is remembered as one of the most important figures of the Second Spanish Republic. He was a passionate advocate of democracy and social reform and his legacy continues to be felt in Spain today.
