Mario Murillo was a Costa Rican footballer who played as a forward. He began his career in 1945 with Herediano, and went on to play for several other clubs in Costa Rica, including Saprissa, Cartaginés, and Limonense. He was part of the Costa Rican national team from 1948 to 1956, and was part of the squad that won the 1949 Central American and Caribbean Games. Murillo was known for his speed and agility, and was considered one of the best players of his generation. He was also known for his leadership and sportsmanship, and was respected by his peers. Murillo retired from football in 1960, and went on to become a coach. He coached several teams in Costa Rica, including Herediano, Saprissa, and Cartaginés. He also coached the Costa Rican national team from 1975 to 1977. Murillo passed away in 2020 at the age of 96. He was remembered as one of the greatest players in Costa Rican football history.

1956

He finished his playing career in Costa Rica, winning two of his four Primera titles with Herediano in 1956 and 1961. A serious foot injury ended his career in 1961.

1950

Murillo made 12 appearances for the Costa Rica national football team, making his debut in 1950.

1945

Murillo began playing professional football with Mexican Primera División side Moctezuma de Orizaba in 1945. Three seasons later, he joined Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz for one season. Nicknamed El cañonero, Murillo returned to Herediano briefly before playing professionally in Colombia with Universidad de Bogotá from 1950 to 1952. He also played in Venezuela for Litoral Sport Club.

Born in Santa Bárbara, Heredia, Murillo played as a defender, midfielder and goalkeeper. He began his career with local Costa Rican Primera División side C.S. Herediano in 1943. He helped the club to a runner-up finish in the 1943 Costa Rican Primera División season.
