He attended the University of Missouri, where he studied theater and film. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Moran's first major role was in the 1971 film The Last Picture Show, directed by Peter Bogdanovich. He went on to appear in several other films, including The Sting (1973), The Great Gatsby (1974), and The Long Goodbye (1973). He also had a recurring role on the television series The Waltons, playing the character of John-Boy Walton. In addition to his acting career, Moran has also directed and produced several films, including the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead (1985).
