Mark Paterson is a public servant who has held a number of senior positions in the Australian government. He was appointed Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in October 2013, and served in that role until October 2017. Paterson was born in Glenelg, South Australia, and attended the University of Adelaide, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. He then went on to complete a Master of Arts in International Relations at the Australian National University in 1979. Paterson began his career in the public service in 1979, when he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs. He held a number of senior positions in the Department, including Deputy Secretary from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, Paterson was appointed Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, a position he held until 2003. He then moved to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, where he served as Deputy Secretary from 2003 to 2007. In 2007, Paterson was appointed Secretary of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, a position he held until 2013. He then returned to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, where he served as Secretary until 2017. Paterson is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Non-Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. He is also a member of the Board of the Australian National University.

Paterson commenced as Commissioner, Regulatory Operations, of Australian Skills Quality Authority on 30 May 2016. The Commissioner, Regulatory Operations, is responsible for the effective implementation of ASQA’s regulatory operations. This includes the initial assessment of regulatory matters, ASQA’s extensive audit program and the growing focus on investigations and enforcement action in serious cases. The Commissioner also has oversight of ASQA’s course accreditation process which accredits new courses to be nationally recognised, and ASQA’s regulatory reporting functions.
