Beissinger received his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Duke University in 1976 and his doctorate in political science from Harvard in 1982. He taught at Harvard from 1982 until 1987, and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, from 1988 until 2006 and was chair of their Political Science Department from 2001 to 2004. Since 2006 he has taught at Princeton University as a full professor. He subsequently became director of the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. In 2007 he was president of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (AAASS).

Beissinger (born November 28, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American Sovietologist  and author of the book Nationalist Mobilization and the Collapse of the Soviet State, which won the 2003 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book on government, politics, or international affairs as awarded by the American Political Science Association, and the 2003 Mattei Dogan Award, presented by the Society for Comparative Research for the best book published in the field of comparative research. He is also the author of the book Scientific Management, Socialist Discipline, and Soviet Power.
