Mark van Platen was born in the Netherlands and studied music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He has composed works for orchestra, chamber music, and solo instruments, as well as choral works and music for theatre and film. He has conducted orchestras in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States, and has been a guest conductor for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. He has also been a professor of composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Van Platen has received numerous awards and honors, including the Dutch Music Prize, the Dutch Composers Prize, and the Dutch Music Council Prize. He has also been awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, the highest honor in the Netherlands. Van Platen is currently the artistic director of the Dutch National Opera and the Dutch National Ballet. He is also a member of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Choir.
