Martin Carver is a British archaeologist and academic. He is best known for his work on the Sutton Hoo ship burial, which he excavated between 1965 and 1971. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of York. Carver was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and studied at the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained a BSc in Geography in 1962. He then went on to study archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, where he obtained a PhD in 1965. Carver has held a number of academic posts, including Professor of Archaeology at the University of York (1984-2006), and Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge (2006-2008). He has also held a number of visiting fellowships, including at the British Academy (1984-1985) and the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Bristol (1985-1986). Carver has written extensively on the archaeology of the British Isles, and has published numerous books and articles on the subject. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy.
