Martin Williams (writer) was an American writer and editor who wrote for The New Yorker, The New York Times, and other publications. He was born on August 9, 1924 in New York City. Williams was educated at Harvard University, where he earned a B.A. in English in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. After his military service, he worked as an editor at The New Yorker from 1947 to 1951. He then worked as a freelance writer and editor for various publications, including The New York Times, The New Republic, and The Atlantic. Williams wrote several books, including The Story of Jazz (1956), The Jazz Tradition (1970), and Jazz Masters of the Twenties (1972). He also wrote a memoir, A World of Words (1995). Williams was married to the writer and editor Marya Mannes from 1951 until her death in 1990. He died on April 8, 2013, at the age of 88. Williams had an estimated net worth of $1 million at the time of his death.
