Martine Piccart is a Belgian physician, oncologist, and medical researcher. She is the founder and president of the Breast International Group (BIG), a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of new treatments for breast cancer. She is also a professor of oncology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and a professor of medicine at the University of Leuven. Piccart was born in Brussels, Belgium, on 18 June 1953. She studied medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, graduating in 1979. She then completed a residency in internal medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Leuven. Piccart has been involved in numerous clinical trials and research projects related to breast cancer. She is the author of more than 500 scientific publications and has received numerous awards for her work, including the Légion d'Honneur from the French government in 2008. Piccart is married to fellow oncologist Jean-Pierre Léonard and has two children. She is an avid runner and has completed several marathons.

Prof. Piccart is currently the Immediate Past Chair of BIG, and President of BIG against breast cancer, the unit within BIG dedicated entirely to raising funds to support BIG’s research.

1996

A strong advocate for and leader of international research collaborations, Prof. Piccart, together with Prof. Aron Goldhirsch, co-founded in 1996 the Breast International Group (BIG) to foster collaboration and accelerate the development of better breast cancer treatments. The organisation, which became a legal entity in 1999, is now chaired by Prof. David Cameron and unites 57 academic breast cancer research groups from around the world. About 30 clinical trials and research programmes are run or in development under the BIG umbrella at any one time, and several of BIG’s past studies are already considered landmark and practice-changing.

She graduated as a medical doctor from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in 1978, where she also met her future husband, Dr. Michael Gebhart. She obtained her internal medicine certification at the ULB in 1983. After she graduated she worked as a fellow for two years with Prof. Franco Muggia at New York University Medical Center (1983–85). Returning to Brussels, she worked for Prof. J. Klastersky, head of internal medicine at the Jules Bordet Institute. She became certified in European medical oncology in London in 1989, and earned her PhD from the ULB in 1993.
