Mary Bousted is an English educationalist and trade union leader. She is the General Secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), a post she has held since 2003. She is also the Joint General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). Bousted was born in Lancashire in 1959. She attended the University of Manchester, where she studied English and Education. She then went on to gain a PhD in Education from the University of London. Bousted began her career as a teacher in London, before becoming a lecturer at the University of East London. She then moved to the University of Greenwich, where she was Head of the Department of Education. Bousted has been a member of the ATL since 1989, and was elected as its General Secretary in 2003. She is also a member of the TUC General Council, and was appointed as Joint General Secretary in 2017. Bousted is a strong advocate for education reform, and has been a vocal critic of government policies. She has also been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights, and has spoken out against discrimination in the workplace. Bousted is married to fellow educationalist, Professor John Holford. They have two children.
