Mary Madkour was born to parents, Charles and Mary Bliss. She attended Swanton High School and graduated in 1945. She then attended the University of Vermont, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949. Madkour began her political career in the 1950s, when she was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. She served in the House from 1955 to 1959. In 1959, she was elected to the Vermont Senate, where she served until 1965. In 1965, Madkour was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Vermont's at-large congressional district. She served in the House until 1971. In 1971, Madkour was appointed to the United States Senate, where she served until 1977. During her time in the Senate, she was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Madkour has been active in numerous civic and charitable organizations, including the American Red Cross, the United Way, and the National Council of Jewish Women. Madkour is currently 86 years old.
