Max Coley was born in 1927 in the United States. He is a former American football coach who served as the head coach of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1965 to 1972. He was also the head coach of the University of Tennessee at Martin from 1973 to 1975. Coley was a three-sport athlete at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the 1951 Southern Conference championship football team. Coley began his coaching career at Chattanooga High School in 1955. He then served as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1956 to 1964. In 1965, Coley was named the head coach of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He led the Moccasins to a record of 44-41-2 in eight seasons. In 1973, Coley was named the head coach of the University of Tennessee at Martin. He led the Skyhawks to a record of 11-25-1 in three seasons. Coley retired from coaching in 1975 and returned to Chattanooga. He was inducted into the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Hall of Fame in 1982.
