He is a member of the Indian National Congress and has held various positions in the party. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Pilibhit from 1962 to 1967 and again from 1972 to 1977. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) from Pilibhit from 1977 to 1980. Khan has been actively involved in politics since the 1950s and has held various positions in the Indian National Congress. He was the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 1975 to 1977 and was also the president of the All India Congress Committee from 1977 to 1980. He was also the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 1980 to 1984. Khan is married to Shabnam Khan and has two sons, Shamsul Hasan Khan Jr. and Shamsul Hasan Khan III. He is a philanthropist and has been involved in various social and charitable activities. He is also a patron of the Shamsul Hasan Khan Foundation, which works towards the upliftment of the underprivileged.
