She was born in Seattle, Washington, and attended the University of Washington, where she studied drama and literature. Terry began her career as an actor, appearing in productions of the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Seattle Opera. She later moved to New York City, where she wrote and directed her own plays. Her works include Viet Rock, The Glitter Dome, and The Convent. In addition to her work as a playwright, Terry has also written for television and film. She wrote the screenplay for the film The Glitter Dome, which was released in 1984. She also wrote for the television series The Equalizer and Miami Vice. Terry has received numerous awards for her work, including the Obie Award for Best Playwright in 1975 and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play in 1976.
