Melville W. Fuller was an American lawyer and the eighth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He was born in Augusta, Maine, on February 11, 1833, to Catherine Martin and Frederick Augustus Fuller. He attended Bowdoin College and Harvard Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1855. Fuller practiced law in Chicago and was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1864 to 1867. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1888 by President Grover Cleveland and served until 1910. During his tenure, he wrote several important opinions, including the majority opinion in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation. Fuller was a strong advocate of judicial restraint and believed that the Supreme Court should not interfere with the decisions of the other branches of government. He was also a proponent of the doctrine of stare decisis, which holds that courts should follow the precedents set by earlier decisions. Fuller died in 1910 at the age of 77. He was buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery.
