Menachem Begin was an Israeli politician, statesman, and founder of the right-wing Likud party. He served as the sixth Prime Minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. Begin was born in Brzesc, Poland, to Zeev Dov and Hassia Begin. He was raised in a religious Zionist family and was educated in a religious school. He was a leader of the Irgun, a militant Zionist organization, from 1943 to 1948, and was elected to the Knesset in 1949. Begin was a controversial figure in Israeli politics. He was known for his uncompromising stance on the Arab-Israeli conflict and his hardline policies towards the Palestinians. He was also a strong advocate of Jewish settlement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Begin was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978 for his role in negotiating the Camp David Accords with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. He died in 1992 at the age of 79.
