Michael Billington is an English actor, writer, and soundtrack composer. He is best known for his roles in the films The Elephant Man (1980), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), and The Dresser (1983). He has also appeared in numerous television series, including The Avengers (1961–1969), The Professionals (1977–1983), and The Bill (1984–2010). Billington was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, on 24 December 1941. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where he studied acting. Billington's first major role was in the film The Elephant Man (1980), in which he played the role of Dr. Frederick Treves. He went on to appear in a number of other films, including The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), The Dresser (1983), and The Madness of King George (1994). Billington has also appeared in numerous television series, including The Avengers (1961–1969), The Professionals (1977–1983), and The Bill (1984–2010). He has also written and composed music for television and film. Billington is married to actress and singer, Joanna Lumley. They have two children, James and Kate.
