Michael D. Kohn is an American lawyer and former United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was born on December 28, 1954 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in 1976 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1979. Kohn began his legal career as a law clerk to Judge John J. Gibbons of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit from 1979 to 1980. He then worked as an associate at the law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. He then returned to Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, where he was a partner from 1985 to 1997. In 1997, Kohn was nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia vacated by Joyce Hens Green. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 21, 1997, and received his commission on October 22, 1997. He served as Chief Judge from 2008 to 2015. He assumed senior status on December 31, 2015.
